ART OPENING
maya hayuk "evidence of life"
111 minna gallery
thursday june 7th 6pm-late
dj's will lemon and ezra li eismont

evidence of life is part of a larger series commissioned by the san
francisco arts commission's market street art in transit kiosk project
2001. this project appears in in the triangular kiosks on market street
between van ness and embarcadero from may 18th through august 16th. in
conjunction with the the outdoor poster exhibit, 111 minna will exhibit
the original wood paintings for this art in transit poster series as well
as painting and photographic installations.

in these technological times where the dignity of manual labor is
unappreciated maya hayuk's 'evidence of life' seies offers us new insight
into the unsung heros of the labor force. hayuk takes a look at the
individuals within the superstructure giving both the whole and the
individula parts that make a human side. this series of paintings are
based on photographs of a range of service employees such as street
cleaner, office worker, bike courier and numerous others taken by the
artist. hayuk also noted the comments made by her subjects; comments such
as " i would like to be riding my motorcylce instead of working" that
attest to the banal outlook most of these workers share about their jobs
as well as offering a unique insight into their unique characters and
lives.

maya hayuk has lived and worked in san francisco since 1991. recent public
art projects include wood posters for the defenestration building, a mural
for galeria de la raza and co-organization for the clarion alley mural
project. she has shown her work in numerous local galleries and museums
including southern exposure, culture cache gallery, the lab and 111 minna-
as well as in los angeles, portland, seattle, boston and new york.

this is her first solo show in san francisco.

Rodriguez's roots are in the very early years of Hip Hop culture in the
South Bronx, since 1976 he has participated and expanded the methodology
of expressing and educating artists and people about Urban Culture. He
and his brother Randy are regarded as pioneers and the first to bring Hip
Hop culture online with the launch of voiceoftheghetto.com in 1990. He is
also regarded as a pioneer and the preeminent sculptor of his generation
for transforming Wild Style subway art into sculptural objects. Since
1985 his sculptures have been exhibited and collected for their
uniqueness and importance to the culture.

His approach to the BET award was inspired by a new concept called
"transitism" which deals with the intellectual interpretation of Wild
Style art, movement, forms and light. "Elements of Transitism were
utilized in the creation of BET's award", said Rodriguez. " I wanted the
award to elude to excellence, understating a rise above diversity with
the intersecting of star powers to represent will and force.
