How to get updates to THE INTERNET PRESS: See end of file

The Internet is full of many high-quality publications about the net
itself. But surprise, surprise, like everything else 'round here they're
tough to find. Here's some guidance on what's out there and what's good.
Some are pointers to other net resources, some address broader issues of
the net. Some are free, some cost $$$. Be warned that some of these are
startups, which often fail to live up to their promise and publication
schedule.

NO EXCUSES: Yeah, we know it's been months since this was updated. One
of us is a sloth (we're not saying which one). But we've come up with a
whole mess of new pubs that you might find interesting.
The bad news is that there's a lot of redundancy out there, with a lot
of the new pubs imitating existing stuff, or at least plowing the same
earth. But there's still plenty of quality out there.
We've also added a list of print mags focusing on the net that offer some
material online.

FEEDBACK Y'ALL: Let us know about any other good e-journals or newsletters
discussing the Internet, paid or free. And please send us info about anything
that dies so we can up date. Send details to higgins@dorsai.dorsai.org
and savetz@northcoast.com

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-BEST OF THE PRESS-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Higgins picks: NetSurfer Digest; Scout Report; @NY; Suck;
               Cyberwire Dispatch
Savetz picks:  Internet Index; Off the Net; Web Review (I write for 'em);
               WEBster

worth checking.

but worth checking out.
WWW - http://www.hw.ac.uk/libWWW/irn/irn.html

THE INTERNET SEX SURFER NEWS ($): Not being much for spectator sports, the
"adult" side of the net isn't our groove. But given that sector's popularity,
it deserves its own e-pub. Bi-weekly. Delivery by e-mail, but you must regis
ter by snail mail with a puny $3 annual subscription payment (to keep every
14-year-old with an AOL account from signing up).
SNAIL MAIL: Phillip Mason
  403 Stringtown Road
  Williamsburg, KY 40769-9727 (USA)
HUMAN CONTACT - phillip@iglou.com

NEW ON THE INTERNET: Completely different from the similarly-named $$$ pub.
A decent collection of pointers and ideas, though a bit on the breathless side.

+TRAILBLAZER - A pretty good review of recent net news.
WWW - http://www.intercom.net/biz/lma/trailblazer/

+@NY - An excellent bi-weekly focusing on the New York Internet scene,
developers, nifty sites, providers, etc. You wouldn't think there was

+GINA - A lame archive for techie press releases. The best thing to be said is

WWW - http://www.gina.com/gina
HUMAN CONTACT - mshuler@gina.com

GLOBETROTTER - British Web-based bi-monthly featuring news about the net.
Nothing dramatic and therre too much stuff about other topics, though (OJ,

little bland.

  Subject: ignored
  Body: subscribe internet-index
WWW - http://www.openmarket.com/info/internet-index/current.html

+THE INTERNET LAW JOURNAL - Can't find a copy to review, so it's hard to
say if they can match the good cyberlaw coverage available elsewhere
(particularly Computer Underground Digest). But they're charging $12 a
year.
  WWW - http://net.discnt.com/law

INTERNET MONTHLY REPORT: IMR announces the online
accomplishments, milestones, and problems discovered by a variety of

+INTERNET RESEARCH - Academic journal largely on the tech side of the net.
Parts are miserable, particularly the "About the Authors" link, which begins to
send a 2-meg file.

JASBITS: Computer and net miscellanea. What it lacks in newsiness
it makes up in entertainment value.

techie/academic. Subs are $25 a year. Samples readily available.
E-MAIL - To: mids@tic.com
  Subject: Ask nicely
  Body: Humans here
WWW - http://www.tic.com/mids/mn.html

META MAGAZINE: A monthly mostly about net-related stuff. Not bad,
but could use a little more meat. Worth a test drive, if you can handle
the Web-only nature of the pub.
WWW - ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/mlinksva/meta.html

It's OK, but there are better sources of news out there.

  Subject: subscribe
WWW - http://www.northcoast.com/ndn/1.2.html

+THE ONLINE COLUMN - The York County Coast Star has a cyber columnist? This
the Kennebunkport, Maine paper does. It's not bad, but better on local issues
(like Nynex's push into Internet services) than on cyberporn.

Lots of fun even though they sold out to the great corporate multiplex they
slam regularly.
WWW - http://www.suck.com/

+TASTY BITS FROM THE TECHNOLOGY FRONT - Terrible name, but TBTF is a solid
twice-weekly pub with an emphasis on commere on the net.
WWW - http://www.atria.com/~dawson/tbtf/archive/current-issue.html

+WEBSURF - Web-based magzine, largely about non-net stuff, but offers some
links and Web-publishing advice.
WWW - http://www.crl.com/~whisper/WEB1TOC.html

+!WOW! - Weird Online World has gone through a couple of iterations from a
staffer at Web Week, but when it comes out it's got pretty good news and
commentary about the net.
WWW -http://www.dorsai.org/~tristan/MAG/

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-REPURPOSED-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Print magazines and newsletters covering the net offer resources of uneven
quality online as well. Web Week and Simba are the best, while press-release-
driven sites like Interactive Age (yes, it's not quite dead yet) are lame.
