Serial line framing

H.261 is part of the H.320 suite of protocols which encompass the H.221 framing protocol. For transmission of H.261 over serial links, H.221 is the recommended choice. H.221 is not suitable for transmission over packet networks as it is an isochronous protocol, and cannot cope with packet loss.

PPP and SLIP are the usual methods of sending IP over serial lines.
