Subject: HANSO 3.0, Hybrid Algorithm for Non-Smooth Optimization


I'm happy to announce Version 3.0 of HANSO (Hybrid Algorithm for Non-
Smooth optimization). HANSO is based on BFGS (a surprisingly effective
method for nonsmooth optimization, convex or nonconvex, but with no
convergence guarantees for nonsmooth functions) and Gradient Sampling
(a more computationally demanding method, but with a convergence
theory for a broad class of nonsmooth functions). Version 3.0
implements a new variant of the Gradient Sampling algorithm with the
stronger guarantees given in a recent survey paper by Burke, Curtis,
Lewis, Simoes and myself:

order modelling" to be held (virtually) at ICMS, Edinburgh, on the
15th of October from 1 to 5PM (UK time). This workshop is the final
one in the series "LMS Scottish Numerical Methods Network", that has
been running for the last 3 years, and involves the universities of
Strathclyde, Heriot-Watt, Edinburgh, and Dundee.

how can ROM can be interpreted in different ways, ranging from reduced

We are pleased to announce the Summer School on Advanced Domain
Decomposition Methods, in Milan, Italy.

The goal of this summer school is to introduce basic and advanced
domain decomposition methods to researchers interested in
understanding these methods, and to give them detailed insight on how
these methods reduce various error components and are used in
practice. The course will cover domain decomposition methods for
various problems ranging from classical stationary partial
differential equations (PDEs) to time-dependent problems, passing
through PDEs with high-contrast coefficients and heterogeneous
problems.

The school is suitable for young mathematitians (PhD students and
highly motivated Master Students), who wish to either get in touch
with domain decomposition methods, as well as young researchers and
Post-doc who desire to strengthen and broaden their knowledge on
advanced domain decomposition techniques.

The research unit NUMA, Department of Computer Science, KU Leuven,

research unit covers many aspects of numerics, including approximation
theory, numerical integration, numerical (multi)linear algebra,
numerical PDEs, uncertainty quantification, optimization and control,
discrete optimization and scheduling, network problems, data science,
HPC and applied numerical mathematics. The recent surge in advanced
techniques for data acquisition gives rise to computational tasks of a
complexity far beyond numerical simulation as integrating measurement
data in complex models requires specific numerical algorithms. In the
simplest setting, finding the 'best' model parameters given some
measurement data is an optimization problem. However, demands of
practical applications often go far beyond this optimization: one can,
for instance, also be interested in quantifying the uncertainty on the
resulting optimum, the remaining modeling error with respect to the
physical system, or the evolution of the model as a function of time
(if data is continuously gathered). The new faculty position aims to
strengthen NUMA's position in scientific computing towards a data rich
environment. The successful candidate is expected to develop a
research program in inverse problems and data assimilation, ensure

MLIAPs with density functional theory data, UQ with IAP model error

The university of Pisa is currently accepting applications for a PhD
position at the intersection of computer science, optimization and
energy problems. This PhD position will be under the supervision of
Prof. Antonio Frangioni. The PhD candidate will also be in close
collaboration with researchers from EDF Lab (Paris Area) and further
researchers through the PGMO program. Part of the PhD will take place,
if sanitary measures permit it, at EDF Lab.

About the Institute: The Department of Computer Science of the
University of Pisa is the oldest of its kind in Italy, and the
Computer Science Ph.D. School has the same distinction. The Doctorate
accepts applications for all areas of Computer Science, Optimization
and Numerical Analysis.

Duration: Three years. The deadline for the application is October 15,
2021. The selection process is expected to be performed swiftly
thereafter and the activity to start before year's end.

Compensation: Standard Italian Ph.D. student fare, about 1150
Euro/month net. A contribution to increased living expenses will be
available to support the student during the foreseen stay abroad (at

Requirements for the PhD position: basically any STEM Master degree
(Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, ...), decent English
level and very good academic record. Knowledge of optimization
techniques and software is a plus, as is resilience and a taste for
discovery.

Project abstract: In the "Fit for 55" climate package the EU has set
the world's most ambitious targets for the decarbonification of the
energy system (ES). Achieving those objectives requires all the
stakeholders to forecast the response of the ES to the possible
changes over long timescales. This requires building mathematical
models that take into account uncertainties, be multi-level and
multi-scale, and properly represent the many combinatorial and
nonlinear aspects of the ES. The corresponding monolithic optimization
problems are too large to tackle even on the best HPC systems. The
only approaches that can possibly tackle problems of this scale and
complexity without resorting to dramatic over-simplifications, as
customary in current strategic ES models, are decomposition ones,
since they are capable of exploiting all the several forms of
structure (scenarios, geographical and temporal scales) they
possess. However, standard modelling systems do not support implement
multi-level, heterogeneous decomposition approaches.

The Physics of Functional Material Group is looking for a PhD student
in the area of numerical micromagnetics. The topic of the PhD thesis
is "Nodal finite-difference micromagnetics on distributed
systems". The aim of this PhD project is the development and
implementation of a novel nodal finite-difference approach for
micromagnetics that will combine the benefits of the finite-element
method and the finite-difference method. Namely, this hybrid method
will allow for a rigorous description of multiphase magnets by a
variational approach related to finite elements while making use of
fast convolution techniques known from finite- difference
micromagnetics. State-of the art tensor libraries such as
TensorFlow/Pytorch will be used in order to implement the novel
approach, enabling the use of modern distributed hardware such as
multi GPU machines.

Computational micromagnetics has a long history as a valuable tool for
the theoretical investigation of magnetic systems at the micron
scale. Despite massive advances in computing power, today's
micromagnetic simulations are still restricted to the micron sized
systems since the micromagnetic model calls for a very fine spatial
discretization in the single-digit nanometer regime. The FWF project
"Very largescale distributed micromagnetic research tools" aims to
push the boundaries of micromagnetic simulations towards larger
systems by introducing recent algorithms and technologies to numerical
micromagnetics which are particularly suited for d istributed systems
and novel hardware.

This position is funded for 3 years and is paid with a monthly gross
salary of 2 237.60E UR for 30 h/week.

The Doctorate School of the Universities of Pisa, Firenze and Siena
has opened a special Ph.D. bourse on the topic "For an efficient
decarbonisation of Local Public Transport".

Detailed description: The "Fit for 55" package has set ambitious
emission reduction targets that can only be achieved with a
multifactorial approach. Local Public Transport (LPT) already offers
much lower emissions per passenger / km than owned cars. Increase
penetration of electric cars will lead, at constant rates, to a
reduction in emissions; but the electrification of the LPT fleet and
the increase in the share of multimodal journeys would lead to much
greater reductions. However, electrifying the LPT entails considerable
problems, related e.g. to the need for frequent charging stops, which
could lead to cost increases or decreases in Quality of Service (QoS),
and therefore to a decrease in the use of LPT which would be
detrimental to the decarbonisation objectives.

Duration: Three years. The deadline for the application is October 15,
2021. The selection process is expected to be performed swiftly
thereafter and the activity to start before year's end.

Requirements for the PhD position: basically any STEM Master degree
(Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, ...), decent English
level and very good academic record. Knowledge of optimization
techniques and software is a plus, as is resilience and a taste for
discovery.
