Subject: Assyr Abdulle (1971-2021)

It is with great sorrow that we announce that our colleague and friend
Assyr Abdulle passed away on September 1st, after courageously
fighting illness for many years.

Assyr was a world-renowned expert in the field of numerical methods
for stochastic differential equations and multiscale problems, where
he made numerous landmark contributions. He was an energetic,
enthusiastic, and passionate colleague, always open to new ideas and
engaged in promoting mathematics at EPFL. He played an essential role
in creating and shaping a unified Institute of Mathematics at
EPFL. Assyr was very much appreciated by students as a teacher and a
mentor.

We have set up a tribute page to commemorate Assyr at

Subject: Release 1.2.0.10 of librsb, Sparse BLAS Software Library

Version 1.2.0.10 of the "librsb" library for high performance sparse
matrix computations based on the "Recursive Sparse Blocks" (RSB)
format is out and available for download.

librsb is mainly for iterative methods implementors; it features cache
efficient, multithreaded sparse matrix-vector multiplication, and it
is especially fast in the symmetric and transposed variants. Many
options and further matrix operations are available.

Both Sparse BLAS and the own interfaces are supported (C/C++,
Fortran). You can also use librsb transparently in a Matlab-style
fashion via the GNU Octave `sparsersb` package and command, or in
Python via the `pyrsb.rsb_matrix` class inspired by `scipy.sparse`
classes.

This is a bugfixes release; see detailed changes in the NEWS file.
The source code of librsb is LGPLv3 licensed.

Subject: New Book, Delay Differential Equations and Applications to Biology

Delay Differential Equations and Applications to Biology
Springer 2021, by Fathalla a. Rihan

This book https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007%2F978-981-16-0626-7#
about discusses the numerical treatment of delay differential
equations and their applications in bioscience. A wide range of delay
differential equations is discussed with integer and fractional-order
derivatives to demonstrate their richer mathematical framework
compared to differential equations without memory for the analysis of
dynamical systems. The book also provides interesting applications of
delay differential equations in infectious diseases, including
COVID-19. It will be valuable to mathematicians and specialists
associated with mathematical biology, mathematical modeling, life
sciences, immunology, and infectious diseases.

Subject: New Book, Mathematics and Tools for Financial Engineering

Mathematics and Tools for Financial Engineering
by Petros A. Ioannou

This book presents an overview of fundamental concepts in mathematics
and how they are applied to basic financial engineering problems, with
the goal of teaching students to use mathematics and engineering tools
to understand and solve financial problems. Part I covers mathematical
preliminaries and Part II addresses financial topics ranging from low-
to high-risk investments. Based on lectures for a master's program in
financial engineering given by the author over 12 years at the
University of Southern California, it contains numerous examples and
problems, establishes a strong general mathematics background and
engineering modeling techniques in a pedagogical fashion, and covers
numerical techniques with applications to solving financial problems
using different software tools.

Subject: New Book, Matrix Analysis and Computations

Matrix Analysis and Computations
by Zhong-Zhi Bai and Jian-Yu Pan

This comprehensive book is presented in two parts; the first part
introduces the basics of matrix analysis necessary for matrix
computations, and the second part presents representative methods and
the corresponding theories in matrix computations. Among the key
features of the book are the extensive exercises at the end of each
chapter. The book provides readers with the matrix theory necessary
for matrix computations, especially for direct and iterative methods
for solving systems of linear equations. It includes systematic
methods and rigorous theory on matrix splitting iteration methods and
Krylov subspace iteration methods, as well as current results on
preconditioning and iterative methods for solving standard and
generalized saddle-point linear systems.

explore how charts related to climate change and COVID-19 are created
and understood both by researchers and public audiences. We welcome
candidates with a background in Computing (with a specialization in
Human Computer Interaction, Data Visualisation or Data Science) or in
Information Science, Science and Technology Studies, or related
areas. Read more about the project and the job description here:
- Project-specific PhD (3-years), https://tinyurl.com/35fpetkd
- Open topic PhD (4-years): https://tinyurl.com/yhbh66m9
Please get in touch via email with Laura Koesten
([email protected]) or Kathleen Gregory
([email protected]) if you have any questions about the
role descriptions or application process for the Talking Charts project.

Project "Interpretability and Explainability as Drivers to Democracy":
The project is about machine learning models that are used for making
decisions with significant societal impact in democratic societies. In
particular, the project's aim is to enable informed evaluation of
machine learning models and their usage by the electorate through
interpretability and explainability of the used models and
communication of these models and their roles in the decision making
process in suitable forms. The underlying decision making process is
considered to involve different stakeholders with different levels of
expertise and achieving the project's aims requires the development of
novel machine learning models, visualization approaches, and
guidelines. Project-specific PhD:

Please get in touch via email with Sebastian Tschiatschek
([email protected]) if you have any questions about
the role descriptions or application process for the Interpretability
and Explainability project.
