Subject: Exascale Simulation of integrated Engineering Systems, ONLINE, Jan=
2021
Workshop on "Towards Exascale Simulation of integrated engineering
systems at extreme scale" 21-22 January, No Cost, Virtual via Zoom
(Registration required to obtain link)
The imminent deployment of exascale computing will usher in a new era
of engineering system prediction, design and optimisation. It would
enable a whole-system approach in a seamless fashion that
significantly cuts the development cycle and cost. Before such a full
potential can be realised, a fundamental rethink is needed about how
we construct physical models and application software codes for the
new computer architectures and software libraries. Sophisticated
engineering systems typically involve multi-physical processes, such
as flow, heat transfer, chemical reactions, electromagnetics,
acoustics, and fluid-structure interaction, often in complex
geometries. How to integrate existing methods and/or develop
completely new methods to make full use of exascale computing is a
grand challenge for mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists as
well as engineers. In this workshop, leading experts in the field will
showcase recent efforts in the development of modelling methodologies,
computer algorithms, software interfaces, and software/hardware co-
design in preparation for the arrival of exascale computing.

Mathematics Adapting to a Changing World
Science and technology play an increasingly important role in
supporting the defence and security industries. Mathematics is
fundamental to these two disciplines, providing a framework for
understanding and solving the varied and complex problems faced, and
to model systems and scenarios. These models are then used to estimate
system performance, find weaknesses in real systems, and suggest
improvements. This conference brings together a wide variety of
mathematical methods with defence and security applications. The
programme will include keynote speakers, presentations and poster
sessions, as well as refreshment breaks for informal discussions. It
is aimed towards mathematicians, scientists and engineers from both
industry and academia, in addition to government and military
personnel who have an interest in how mathematics can be applied to
defence and security problems. This will be the sixth Mathematics in
Defence and Security, conference albeit the first with \370Security\371
explicitly mentioned in the title; the previous conferences each
attracted over 100 delegates from a wide range of organisations
including Dstl, QinetiQ, AWE, BAE Systems, Thales, Rolls Royce, the
IMA, the MoD, academia and international parties. In response to the
Covid-19 situation, this event will be held virtually via Zoom

Subject: Full Professor Position, HPC for PDE, Grenoble Alpes Univ, France
The Laboratoire Jean Kuntzmann (LJK) seeks to recruit a specialist in
numerical methods for partial differential equations, with an advanced
knowledge of new architectures of high performance computers. This
request falls within the following context: The EDP and Airsea teams
have a long history of research in all areas of partial differential
equations applied to the modeling of phenomena of very varied nature,
on the whole range of scales, from nano-physics to the
ocean-atmosphere coupling. A historical common denominator of this
community is the numerical analysis of partial differential equations,
whether by the development of new schemes or numerical methods, by
research on optimal boundary conditions, with the objective to model
more and more complex phenomena (either by their non-linearity or
their size). They have also been engaged for several years in
scientific computing research projects dealing with massive data and
using significant computing resources available in regional (UMS
GRICAD), national (IDRIS) or European (PRACE) computing centers: ANR
HAMM (hybrid computing for scientific computing), ANR Scales
(turbulent transport), ANR HEAT (Highly Efficient ATmospheric
Modeling), SEISCOPE project (3D seismic imagery). The LJK is also
strongly committed, within MaiMoSiNE, a regional platform for the
SIMSEO action, which aims to promote modeling, numerical simulation
and high performance computing (HPC) in SMEs. HPC, once reserved for
large computation centers and large companies, is now spreading
throughout the economic fabric. The stakes are high, in terms of
massive data processing, mathematical modeling and numerical
simulation. Computers are rapidly evolving towards complex
architectures, of the hybrid CPU-GPU type and with a very large number
of cores (exascale computers). To take advantage of these new
architectures, it is often necessary to rethink the numerical methods
and algorithms used for modeling and numerical simulation (increased
scalability, fault tolerance).
The candidate recruited for this position will combine very strong skills i=
n
numerical methods / partial differential equations as well as knowledge of
new architectures and their programming.
